Lavender Hydrosols- Benefits and Uses

When you think of lavender, what thoughts come to mind? Purple flowers lining the fields in the south of France… a wonderful herb to add in a delicious recipe… the gentle and soothing aroma that calms and soothes to sleep. The simple word evokes calming and soothing images in our minds, so vivid we can even smell it! Lavender has been used worldwide for centuries due to its beneficial properties.

What is Lavender?

Lavender is a genus of many different flowering plants in the mint family. The most well-known species of lavender isLavandula angustifolia. This is the species that we commonly recognize when we think of lavender.Lavandula angustifolia is also the species that is most widely cultivated for use in herbs and in essential oils.

This small and delicate member of the mint plant family has been used for its health and beauty properties for centuries. The ancient Greeks and Romans used lavender to adorn their bath waters and enjoy the aroma once it hit the warm water. They also used it to wash, for their perfume, and even formedicinal purposes

Lavender Hydrosol and Hello Cider

At Hello Cider, we use theLavandula angustifolia plant and through steam distillation in our USDA certified copper still, we create the Lavender hydrosol. Have you heard ofhydrosols before? Perhaps you’re already familiar with the term, or perhaps you’ve never heard of it but are familiar with essential oils.

See, both essential oils and hydrosols are made in the same exact process (steam distillation). You can read more on how the process works here. Using thehydrosol instead of the essential oil is our expertise, and our absolute favorite! For the most part, the hydrosol contains the same (sometimes more!) of the beneficial properties as the essential oils of any of the plants we use. However, because the hydrosol is water based (and not oil like essential oils), it can be safely used on adults, children, even pets (except in the cases of allergies and skin sensitivities). It can also be used on fabrics and as room sprays without worrying about the damaging effects of oil on clothes, leather, and fabric.

Lavender Benefits and Uses

Lavender hydrosols and essential oils can help alleviate discomfort caused by sore or tense muscles, as well as help to soothe mild headaches and sprains. With a hydrosol, it is easier to spray on the affected area and in the room as well to absorb the aromatherapy effects.

Because of the calming and soothing therapeutic properties, you can use the lavender hydrosol to spray on your pillowcases, bedsheets, and in your bedroom at night. The aromatherapy of lavender enhances and encourages restful sleep. You can even use it as a face toner at night!

Lavender can also have a positive effect on various skin problems such as rashes, psoriasis, and acne because of its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Simply spray it on a cotton pad or small towel to gently apply it on your skin.

You can even use it as a repellent for bugs! Insects like mosquitoes are deterred by the scent of lavender oil or hydrosol on skin, so many people use it as a natural bug repellant (lemongrass, too!). If you do get bit by a bug, you can use the lavender hydrosol on the affected area. Because of its anti-inflammatory and calming properties, it is soothing for bug bites.

(Quick tip: refrigerate your lavender hydrosol for a refreshing mist to calm and soothe the skin, especially around any bug bites!)
