Turmeric is the new “hot topic” in the skincare world lately, but did you know that the turmeric plant has been used for over 4000 years for its medicinal properties?

Turmeric seems to be more than just a yummy, spicy, colorful addition to your favorite dish or smoothie.

For centuries, Tumeric has been used by Chinese and Ayurvedic communities as medicine. It has been used to treat a number of health issues, ranging from stomach problems, rashes, and even arthritis.

Although the new turmeric wave is fairly recent, the medical community has been researching the benefits of turmeric for quite some time to study Turmeric’s components and health benefits.

And because of their findings and our own experience as chemists with the benefits of turmeric on skincare, we have added it to our Hydrosol collection!

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric, also known asCurcuma lunga, is a beautiful flowering plant from the same family as ginger. It has long, green leaves and a long stem.

The familiar turmeric spice is derived from the root, or “rhizome,” of theCurcuma lunga. After harvesting the rhizome for about 10 months, it is then dried out and ground up into the golden yellow spice we know today!

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is the bioactive ingredient from which most of turmeric’s benefits are derived.

It also contains many more components, but curcumin is the one that is most studied.

Turmeric Benefits

So what exactly does curcumin do?

Stuides have shown that curcumin contains antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, carrying with it major health benefits!

  • The anti-inflammatory properties in Turmeric can help fight chronic inflammation in the body.
  • Those same anti-inflammatory properties promote joint health, as well.  Several studies have shown that Turmeric has been highly beneficial for patients with arthritis.
  • Other studies have shown that Turmeric may also be a potent supplement that can greatly benefit and support a healthy cardiovascular system, healthy cholesterol levels, and even a healthy gut!
