German Chamomile Skincare Benefits

One of the most common activities recommended for people who are stressed or who have had a long day is to drink a nice cup of chamomile tea. It is said that chamomile tea can calm you after a rough day, and can prepare you for sleep. Often seen as the “sleepytime tea,” chamomile tea is one of thefour most popular tea flavors!

But have you ever wondered why chamomile is used in your tea? And if it is naturally calming, can it be used, say… for skincare?

What is German Chamomile?

German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is a small plant with delicate white petals and a yellow center native to southern and eastern Europe. German chamomile resembles a daisy. It has a sweet scent herbaceous aroma with a hint of fresh, sweet apples. It is an ancient herb that has been widely used for centuries. The herb's calming effects were well-known enough to grace the pages of Hippocrates. 

German chamomile is one of the two types of chamomile that is most widely cultivated and used for commercial purposes. The other is Roman chamomile. Both are very similar, in appearance and in properties. Teas, herbs, and cosmetics that contain chamomile will most likely contain one of these two types.

German Chamomile and Chamazulene

Both Roman and German chamomile contain calming and soothing properties; however, German chamomile has more effective anti-inflammatory properties. This made German chamomile the must-have ingredient for our toner!

In the steam distillation process to create our hydrosols, the oil and the water solution separated contain the plant’s essential compounds and beneficial properties.

Once the German chamomile is distilled, it produces chamazulene. Chamazulene is a compound found in some plants, especially chamomile, that is what gives chamomile its wonderful anti-inflammatory properties. 

Although both Roman and German chamomile produce it, German chamomile contains a higher concentration, making it more potent as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. 

This is what makes German chamomile an amazing ingredient for a face toner. Its anti-inflammatory properties help with soothing eczema and red or irritated skin. 

German Chamomile Benefits and Uses

Have acne or acne-prone skin? Acne can cause inflammation of your skin (not to mention, discomfort!), which makes German chamomile the perfect ingredient for your face toner! 

Its analgesic and antiseptic properties also help in fighting the bacteria that can form on your face from everyday toxins and exposure. This in turn, helps fight acne and other infections from built up bacteria.

And because all of our toners act as gentle cleansers, you can skip using harsh soaps and chemicals in your face wash that may be stripping away your natural oil/moisture (which can actually harm your face and cause more acne!).

And of course, German Chamomile also provides a soothing experience for your skin. Dry skin? Dry scalp causing dandruff, itching, and irritation? Try a few sprays of German Chamomile on your dry area, including your scalp; it will ease any discomfort and will hydrate and soothe your skin.
